24. How to test for theme conflicts

1. How do I change/customize the header background image?

After installing the sample content and theme settings there is a default header image set at Appearance > Theme Settings > Content Settings (tab) > Default (sub-tab) in the Default Header Styles section. You can just modify this image if you want the same image on every page/post. Otherwise, you can set different header images for each post type by switching to the other Post Type sub-tabs and setting a Header background in their respective Header Styles section.

If you want a different image on each page you can override the default settings created in the Theme Settings on each individual page/post. Within you pages/posts go to the Apex Page Settings metabox, then select the Elements tab. Change the Page top field to Header and you'll see a new tab appear called Header Style. This is where you can override the default Header background image.

If the post type you are using doesn't have a sub-tab in the Content Settings of the Theme Settings, or if your post type doesn't have an Apex Page Setting metabox, you need to enable these on the Appearance > Theme Settings > Content Settings Sections (sub-tab).

2. Important Delicious Update!

Delicious - Responsive App Landing WordPress Theme

In order to prevent any conflicts with themes called Delicious that may reside on the wordpress.org repository we have chosen to rename the directory of our Delicious theme. Previously our directory was simply name "delicious". In order to prevent update conflicts with any other themes of the same name we have renamed our theme's directory to "digitalscience-delicious".

Unfortunately, there is no way to automatically update your theme to this new directory. You will need to re-download your Delicious theme from your downloads page on ThemeForest and go through the normal install/activation process.

You will not have to worry about losing any data or settings for your site. But, you will need to navigate to your Dashboard > Appearance > Menus page and re-check (and save) the Main Menu (Theme Location) at the bottom of your Main Menu. This is required any time you switch a theme or activate a child theme.

It is also possible that your widgets may be removed from your widget areas, but your populated widgets will still be available in the Inactive Widgets area on your widgets page. If this happens, you will need to drag the your widgets back into the appropriate widget area.

Child Themes

If you are currently using a child theme with Delicious you will need to complete one additional step. Using an FTP editor, navigate to your child theme's directory and open/edit the style.css file. You will see a line near the top of the file that looks like:

Template: delicious

This tells the WordPress which "parent" theme to use with the child theme. Since we have now modified the directory name of Delicious, you will have to modify this line to:

Template: digitalscience-delicious

Make sure to save this file. Additionally (if you see issues on your front-end after adjusting this) you may need to go into your Dashboard > Appearance > Themes page and activate the main Delicious theme briefly. Then you should be able to re-activate your custom Child theme.

Sorry for this unexpected inconvenience. Once you have your Delicious theme updated to the new directory structure we should not have to worry about running into any theme update conflicts.

Thanks again for your purchase!

3. How do I setup the Portfolio page to show the category menus within the gray bar at the top?

Anything located in the right side of the gray bar is setup by using Page Header Widget area.

If you imported the sample content, you should also see a widget area called Page Header Widget – Gallery Archive (which was created using the WooSidebars plugins). Then:

If you did not import the sample content you need to:

4. I have added multiple images to a slider, but when I exit edit mode it shows only one button in the slider navigation.

Make sure to add each image as a separate image block.

You can also add any type of block to ceate a new slide. Each block added to a slider will become a slide for the slider.

Also, go into your Edit > Page Properties dialogue box and click on the Custom Attributes tab. Scroll down the the Page Rotator Attributes to select different options for the rotator (including Auto Rotate, Rotate Speed, etc...). After selecting the attributes you want to use they will show up on the right side of the dialogue box near the top. This is where you will be able to actually set the attributes once they are added.

5. How can I customize the page titles, taglines, background, and other settings for the different post types and single posts?

You first need to enable the page settings for the post types you want to modify.

Go to Appearance > Theme Settings and scroll down to the Content Settings Section.

Here you can enable settings for each post type. You can enable Global settings (that will effect every instance of that post type) and you can set Single post settings to customize for each post. You can also enable both if you want to set global settings and then just override one or 2 things individually.

Once the global settings are activated you can set them in the Content Settings tab of your theme settings. Be sure to then select the correct post type (right under the tabs).

Once the Single post settings are enabled you'll see an Apex Page Settings metabox within each post that you can use to override global settings.

6. I have added the hashtag link to my menu items, but the page is not scrolling. It is still linking to the designated page.

The hashtag link for all menu items should be the same (the ID of the single page). If your single page is the Home page, you need to find the ID of the home page and use that ID for all menu items. If you installed the theme and sample content on a new WordPress install it will most likely be “125”.

The hashtag ID tells WordPress to link to that post as opposed to the actual menu item’s post. So, putting the homepage’s ID forces those menu items to link to the homepage, and then Apex appends a hashtag to the correct section (the menu item) on the homepage.

7. Important Apex Update!

Apex Responsive WordPress Theme

Due to a recent conflict with another theme called Apex that resides on the wordpress.org repository we where forced to rename the directory of our Apex theme. Previously our directory was simply name "apex". In order to prevent update conflicts with the other theme we have renamed our theme's directory to "digitalscience-apex".

Unfortunately, there is not a way to automatically update your theme to this new directory. You will need to re-download your Apex theme from your downloads page on ThemeForest and go through the normal install/activation process.

You will not have to worry about losing any data or settings for your site. But, you will need to navigate to your Dashboard > Appearance > Menus page and re-check (and save) the Primary Menu (Theme Location) at the bottom of your Main Menu. This is required any time you switch a theme or activate a child theme.

Child Themes

If you are currently using a child theme with Apex you will need to complete one additional step. Using an FTP editor, navigate to your child theme's directory and open/edit the style.css file. You will see a line near the top of the file that looks like:

Template: apex

This tells the WordPress which "parent" theme to use with the child theme. Since we have now modified the directory name of Apex, you will have to modify this line to:

Template: digitalscience-apex

Make sure to save this file. Additionally (if you see issues on your front-end after adjusting this) you may need to go into your Dashboard > Appearance > Themes page and activate the main Apex theme briefly. Then you should be able to re-activate your custom Child theme.

Sorry for this unexpected inconvenience. Once you have your Apex theme updated to the new directory structure we should no longer run into these theme update conflicts.

Thanks again for your purchase!

8. Icons are not showing after forwarding web address

Try adding the following to your .htaccess file:

<IfModule mod_headers.c>
    <FilesMatch "\.(eot|font.css|otf|ttc|ttf|woff)$">
        Header set Access-Control-Allow-Origin "*"
    </FilesMatch>
</IfModule>
<IfModule mod_mime.c>
    # Web fonts
    AddType application/font-woff woff
    AddType application/vnd.ms-fontobject eot
    AddType application/x-font-ttf ttc ttf
    AddType font/opentype otf
    AddType image/svg+xml svg svgz
    AddEncoding gzip svgz
</IfModule>

9. How do I remove comments from my pages or posts?

Enabling/disabling comments is a core WordPress option and you can disable these a couple ways.

The easiest way to go to your Edit page screen that lists all of your pages. Hover over a page title and select Quick Edit and you'll be able to uncheck the Allow Comments checkbox. Then be sure to Update your changes.

You can also select all pages using the checkboxes on the left side of the page and do a Bulk Edit (drop down at the top) and disable all comments at once.

The third option is to go into each page separately, select the Screen Options tab at the top and enable the Comments and Discussion metaboxes. Then you'll see an option within those newly displayed metaboxes to disable the comments.

DigiTec WordPress Theme

In order to prevent any conflicts with themes called Digitec that may reside on the wordpress.org repository we have chosen to rename the directory of our Digitec theme. Yes, but there is a bit of manual work to do this. Please download the following plugin http://metaphorcreations.com/files/mtphr-icons-1.0.0.zip. You'll then need to access the plugin files and follow these instructions (these are included in the index.php file of the plugin):

1. Install and activate the plugin

2. Create an account at Fontastic http://fontastic.me/

3. Create a new font package and add your icons

4. Publish your icon font by downloading the font package. Unzip the zip file.

5. Replace the contents of the "fontastic" directory with the contents of your downloaded font

* Note: You may need to set the permissions of the "fontastic" directory and it's contents every time you update your font

6. Increase the "MTPHR_ICONS_VERSION" number (below) every time you update your icon font so the settings update

12. Important ZEN Update!

ZEN Responsive WordPress Theme

In order to prevent any conflicts with themes called ZEN that may reside on the wordpress.org repository we have chosen to rename the directory of our ZEN theme. 13. Hero Element Video Background

If you would like to add a Video to the background of your Hero element, follow these instructions:

  1. Install & activate this plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/video-background/
  2. Then, on your Home page (or whichever page uses the hero element), set the Background rotator to No Rotator (in the Apex Page Settings metabox > Hero Settings tab).
  3. You'll also see a new metabox called Video Background. Set the Container field to .apex-hero and then add your video to the fields below.

14. Contact Form 7 Configuration Issues

If you are running into Configuration issues with the updated Contact Form 7 plugin, please refer to this article: http://www.wiyre.com/solution-contact-form-7-issues-your-contact-form-has-a-configuration-issue/

15. How can I make a link within my content scroll down to a different section on the page?

1. You need to find the id of the html element of the section you want to scroll to and add that id along with a hashtag as the link for your button. The id of that section should look something like: apex-page-133 (where 133 is the post ID of that page).

When you add the link to your button, the link should look like: #apex-page-133 (adjust the ID to reflect your section).

2. After you have added that link to your button, highlight the button text in your editor again and click on the Formats button in the Visual Editor's buttons panel, hover over Custom Styles and select .data-scroll

This will apply a data-scroll class to your button which tells Apex to scroll to that section as opposed to just jumping to it.

3. Update your page/post

16. Why won't my favicon display?

Make sure the file you are using is either a .png or .ico file.

17. Warning: Illegal string offset 'title'

Every once in awhile when sample content is imported the image data for the Hero BG Rotator does not import correctly. When this happens you'll see the following error "Warning: Illegal string offset 'image' in..." and similar listed a bunch of times on the front end of the site.

If this is happening, please go to your Dashboard > News Tickers > Hero BG Rotator and scroll down to the Images panel. There are most likely 3 fields added, but missing their thumbnail images. Click on the thumbnail image of each and select an image and then save your ticker. These are the images that will rotate as the background of your hero element. If there are more than 3 fields, delete the rest of the images so you have a total of 3.

18. What is the best way of disabling certain pages from being indexed by search engines?

There's a couple ways to do this by using the WordPress SEO plugin.

Go to Dashboard > SEO > XML Sitemaps. Here you can choose which post types & taxonomies you want to have indexed, as well as some other settings.

For individual pages, go into that page's Edit screen and find the WordPress SEO by Yoast metabox. Select the Advanced tab and you'll see options for sitemap indexing. You can also setup page forwarding in this tab.

19. Important Domino Update!

20. How do I enable page scrolling when a user clicks on a menu item?

You need to setup the hashtag links for your menu items.

View the Quick Start Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGagXLpLZzI and go to about 9:45 into the video. This shows how to setup the hashtag links which will make your menu links scroll down the page as opposed to linking to the single page.

21. How can I add custom icons to my menu or shortcodes?

I have created a custom plugin that is included in your main download package from ThemeForest. It is called "mtphr-icons" and is located in the "extra-plugins" folder of your downloaded package.

Install and activate that plugin.

After installing the plugin you'll need to open it's directory through an FTP client at "/wp-content/plugins/mtphr-icons". There are instructions to follow in the index.php file of the plugin, but I will list them here as well:

  1. Install and activate this plugin

22. How do I use WooSidebars to create custom widget areas?

  1. Create a new Appearance > Widget Areas post
  2. Name the widget area whatever you’d like.
  3. Select the pages you want the sidebar to display on within the Conditions area.
  4. Select the widget area you'd like to replace under the Sidebar To Replace drop down.
  5. Save the new Widget Area, which will now show up on your Widgets page.

If you wish to create custom sidebars for individual posts you will also need to:

  1. Go to the post (or custom post type) edit list
  2. Under the column labeled Custom Sidebars, select the checkmark for each post you want to enable
  3. You should then have access to them in the Widget Areas settings

24. How to test for theme conflicts

If you are having issues with one of my themes not displaying or working correctly, it may be due to a javascript error or conflict with a plugin you are using. In order to pinpoint the cause of the issue please follow these instructions:

  1. Disable all plugins
  2. Check to see if the theme is now working. If so,
  3. Enable the plugins one-by-one, checking to see of everything is still working correctly
  4. Once you enable a plugin and something stops working, you have found where the issue resides (at least one issue, as there may be others).

This is the quickest and best way to pinpoint where issues are arrising. Once you have targeted either a plugin as having a conflict, or if you found no conflicts, please let me know and I will help from there.
